Today, Senator Liane Sorenson (R-Hockessin) was pleased to introduce
Governor Minner at an event to proclaim February as "TEEN DATING VIOLENCE
AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH" throughout Delaware.
Sen. Sorenson is a Prime Sponsor of Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 3,
bipartisan legislation passed to designate the month for this purpose.
Sorenson is also a long-time member of the Domestic Violence Coordinating
Council and Co-Chair of the Public Awareness and Education Subcommittee.
At the event held at Milford High School, Senator Sorenson also
announced the passage of SCR 3 and read the text of the Resolution, which
presents statistics showing the seriousness of the problem and calls for
action to promote awareness and prevention efforts.
Sen. Sorenson noted that teen dating violence is a serious problem,
citing statistics that are "staggering:
- 20% of female high school students report being physically and/or
sexually abused by a dating partner;
- 57% of teens know someone who has abused in a dating relationship;
- 81% of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit
they don’t know it’s a problem."
